Attention Medical Reimbursement Account Participants....Now, you can be reimbursed for Over-the-Counter Drugs!!

The IRS has announced that Over-the-Counter (OTC) medicines and drugs are reimbursable through your Medical Reimbursement Account. You can now purchase your OTC drugs with Tax Free Dollars! This IRS ruling provides you with more reasons than ever to participate in your FSA plan.

Only items that are purchased to "alleviate or treat personal injuries or sickness" are eligible. These items include, but are not limited to, antacid, allergy medicine, pain relievers and cold medicines. Any item "merely beneficial to the general health" of a participant such as dietary supplements or vitamins are not reimbursable.

Below, you will find a list that will help guide you through what OTC items are reimbursed by your plan. Keep in mind that OTC items must be legal, generally accepted as a medicine or drug, and not a toiletry or cosmetic product. If you do not see a particular item on the list, please contact us.

The IRS has set forth stringent guidelines on claims substantiation. If you are utilizing the BeneFlex Convenience Card, please keep your receipt(s) for substantiation. If you are utilizing paper claims, so that your plan remains in compliance with the new OTC rulings, you must provide us with a completed claim form and itemized receipt that includes the name, purchase date and amount of the OTC item you are claiming.
